My weight loss journey: experiment begins

Here in 2025, the world of weight loss is ever evolving with new trends and techniques on the plate. Like so many, I have always been interested in the newest and best ways to lose those extra pounds. Well, this year I took the plunge and decided to give the most talked-about weight loss trends a trial run, with varying results. In this post, I’ll pen down my personal experiences, the highs and the lows, and the things you won;t expect to happen when you lose weight.
Prelude — The Starting Point
Now before we dive into the trends, here’s a little context. I’m a 35-year-old office worker based in Chicago, living a very sedentary lifestyle. My starting weight was 180, and my goal was 20 pounds over three months. I was committed to trying each trend and following the instructions as closely as I could.
1: AI-Based Tailored Nutrition Plans

The Promise
The first trend I attempted was an AI-generated nutrition plan. The latest tech device used in these tests claimed to check my DNA as well as my gut microbiome (the bacteria, viruses and fungi that live in our gut) and lifestyle–so that it could craft a specifically tailored diet plan, by looking at my personal biology.
The Experience
The setup took was surprisingly snappy. I had ordered a home testing kit, supplied some saliva and stool samples, and filled out a long questionnaire about my habits, preferences and medical history. Within a week, I had my tailor-made nutrition plan on a sexy mobile app.
It was an extremely well-defined plan that provided meal suggestions, recipes and even restaurant recommendations based on where I was located. It also adapts in real time based on my progress and feedback. I was eating foods I never imagined I’d eat under a weight-loss plan, like avocado toast for breakfast and dark chocolate for afternoon snacks.
The Results
A month into the AI-powered plan, I lost 7 pounds. What I found most impressive was how sustainable it felt. I never went hungry or felt deprived, and all the variety made me excited for my meals.
Trend#2:VirtualRealityFitnessClasses
The Promise
Then came virtual reality (VR) fitness. At the time, this trend promised new and better games to make your workouts more engaging and immersive, taking the user to exotic places for their training.
The Experience
I bought a VR headset and got a subscription to a popular fitness app. My living room became a beach in Bali for yoga classes, a boxing ring in New York for cardio workouts, and even the surface of Mars for literal strength training without gravity.
The gamification element was quite encouraging. I found myself eager to beat my own scores and unlock new surroundings. The social features were neat because I could take live classes alongside people from all over the world, which made my fitness journey feel a little more connected.
The Results
By the end of the month, I dropped another 5lbs. The best part was I started training regularly, 5-6 times a week and it did not feel like a chore.
Trend 3: Eating in Harmony With Your Circadian Rhythm
The Promise
This trend is all about aligning your eating pattern with your body’s natural circadian rhythm. Supporters say it can enhance metabolism, boost sleep quality and promote more successful weight loss.
The Experience
This trend required me to drastically change my diet. Dinner, then, is always between the smallest meal and to consume most of my calories in the morning. I also had to follow an eating window, usually from 08:00A.M. to 6:00P.M.
The first week was tough. Having snacked late at night and eaten big dinners, it took a while to get used to earlier, larger meals. However, within a week, I started feeling better, both in terms of energy levels and sleep quality.
The Results
I lost 6 pounds after one month on the circadian rhythm diet. The weight loss was significant, but the biggest change was how I felt. I had more steady energy during the day, and I was sleeping better than I had in years.
Trend 4: Wearable CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitoring) Device

The Promise
Continuous Glucose Monitoring devices, historically utilized exclusively by diabetics have reached the mass weight loss market. These tiny sensors all promise to offer real-time data on how your body reacts to different foods and activities, so you can get an ultra-personalized diet and exercise plan.
The Experience
I had a small sensor on my arm for a month that constantly tracked my blood glucose levels. The data went to my smartphone, where I could track how different meals and activities affected my blood sugar.
This was an eye-opening experience. Foods I assumed were good or okay for my blood sugar sometimes led to surprise spikes, while things I’d been shunning were fine. I discovered the combination of a moderate post-prandial walk that kept my blood sugar levels stable and reduced snacking, in turn leading to feeling better through the day.
The Results
Now armed with the insight of the CGM device, I could make adjustments to my diet and activity levels. By the end of the month, I felt another 4 pounds fall off. None of my measurements were earth-shattering but, more importantly, I felt like I had a better understanding of how my body processes various foods.
Trend 5: Programs that Help You Lose Weight Microbiome
The Promise
The last trend I tested was a weight-loss program based on fostering my gut microbiome. This argument basically says that, by developing a proper balance of gut microorganisms, you can hasten your metabolism, lessen your hunger cravings and take off excess weight.
The Experience
It began with an extensive stool test to assess my existing gut microbiome status. According to the results, I had a tailored plan including particular probiotic supplements, prebiotic foods, and dietary advice.
It was high in fermented foods, such as kimchi and kefir, along with fiber-rich vegetables and whole grains. I was also advised to eliminate some foods that could be harmful to my specific gut microbiome.
The Results
In the first month on this program I lost 3 pounds. Although this was the least weight I lost among all the trends I tried, I did have other positive changes. My digestion was better, and I was much less bloated. I also had less sugar cravings, so it was easier to maintain my overall healthy eating habits as well.
The Final Countdown: A Reflection on My Weight Loss Journey

I had also lost a total of 25 pounds after three months of testing these weight loss trends, surpassing my original 20-pound goal. But here’s a quick synopsis of the results:
- Nutrition Plan Infused with the Power of AI: 7 lb
- VR fitness: 5 pounds
- Circadian Rhythm Dieting: 6 pounds
- Wearable CGM Device: 4 lbs
- Microbiome-Based Program: 3 pounds
But the numbers are only part of the story. And as each trend had its own unique advantages and obstacles, I walked away with a lesson or 2 each time.
Reflections: Putting It Into Perspective

1. Personalization is Key
Perhaps the most interesting takeaway from this experiment was how important customization can be when it comes to weight loss. Both this bespoke AI-powered nutrition plan and the CGM device made it very clear how unique a body is. So what works for one may not be true for all, and having those data-driven insights into your own body can be damning — literally.
2. It’s Better to Go Consistent Than Intense
The virtual reality fitness classes taught me that consistency trumps intensity in any type of exercise. This allowed me to keep a consistent weight-loss regimen, as a result of making workouts enjoyable and on an easy-to-do level.
3. Timing is Important
The circadian rhythm diet taught me how big of a difference meal timing can make when it comes to weight loss and general health. Though we don’t necessarily need to adhere to such a strict eating schedule in the long run, paying attention to the timing of when we’re eating can have a huge impact.
4. Health is More Than Weight
Although the microbiome-based program was the least effective for weight loss, it nonetheless made a huge impact on my overall health and well-being. The fact that weight is only one health measure made me think again; while weight is an important measure, it is important to realize that weight is only a small part of the picture when looking at the big picture of health, digestion, and mental clarity.
5. Technology can serve as a powerful tool
From AI-powered meal plans to VR workouts to wearable devices, technology was a key to my weight loss journey. Those tools gave me motivation, accountability and insights that I wouldn’t have been able to achieve without them.
Heads Up: Sustainable Weight Loss
As I soak in this three-month experiment, and try to sum up all my learnings when asked to, I conclude that sustainable weight loss is not about the next trend or the limitless fix. It’s about finding a way that makes sense for your body, your life and your preferences.”
In future, the best weight loss plan for me will probably include aspects of all the trends I tried:
- Leveraging data & technology in my food choices
- Varying your exercise by making it fun
- Paying attention to when you eat your meals
- Focusing on my gut health
- Learning about and listening to my body.
Conclusion: Embracing a Holistic Approach to Weight Loss
